What Qualifications Should a Drone Pilot Have?

Commercial drone operations require formal licensing in most countries. Hiring an unlicensed operator can void your project insurance and expose you to fines.

United States — Part 107

Commercial UAV operators in the US must hold an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. For night, BVLOS or operations over people, additional waivers may be required.

United Kingdom

UK operators need a CAA Operator ID and an Operational Authorisation (GVC) for commercial work in the Specific category. Many also hold an A2 CofC for closer-to-people operations.

Canada

Transport Canada requires an Advanced or Basic Pilot Certificate plus drone registration. Advanced is needed for controlled airspace and operations near people.

Australia

CASA requires a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) and an operator's Remotely Piloted Aircraft Operator's Certificate (ReOC) for most commercial work.

Insurance

Look for current public liability insurance of at least £1m / US$1m, scaled to the project. UAVsForHire profiles show insurance status.
